What to Expect From Your First Therapy Session
New Leaf Wellness··Getting Started
## The Anticipation Is Often Harder Than the Session
Many people spend weeks or months thinking about starting therapy before finally making an appointment — and then spend the days before that first session convinced they're going to do it wrong. You won't.
Therapy is not a test. There are no wrong answers. And your therapist has heard it all.
## What the First Session Actually Looks Like
The first session is primarily about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask questions about what brought you in, your history, and what you're hoping to get from therapy. Think of it as a conversation, not an interrogation.
You're also interviewing your therapist. Is this someone you feel safe with? Do they seem to understand you? Do they explain their approach? A good therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes — it matters that you feel comfortable.
## You Don't Have to Share Everything Right Away
You get to decide the pace. You don't owe your therapist your whole story in the first session. It's okay to say, "I'm not ready to talk about that yet." A good therapist will respect that.
## Questions Worth Asking Your Therapist
- What is your approach or theoretical orientation?
- How do you typically work with [your concern]?
- What does progress look like in your experience?
- How will we know when we're done?
## After the Session
You might feel relieved, emotional, or even a little raw. All of that is normal. Give yourself some grace — going to therapy is an act of courage. Notice how you feel in the days that follow, and bring those observations to your next session.
